Setting a Wedding Budget: The Guide

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! As you embark on this exciting journey, one important aspect that requires careful planning and consideration is your wedding budget.
Don’t look at inspo, don’t pick our your dream wedding photographer, book a venue, until you establish a solid wedding budget. This is sooo incredibly important! When I say wedding budget, that does not just mean how much you want to spend in total, but a guideline on how much you can spend in each area.

Let’s break it down. A common wedding budget of around 30k could be broken up like so.

Important note*

This budget isn’t for everyone, this is simply an example of how many budgets I have worked with in the past have been developed.

Wedding Budget - $30,000

Wedding Venue - $4,500 (15% of the total budget)
Catering - $7,500 (25% of the total budget)
DJ - $2,100 (7% of the total budget)
Wedding Attire - $1,500 (5% of the total budget)
Photography - $2,700 (9% of the total budget)
Videography - $2,100 (7% of the total budget)
Alcohol - $3,000 (10% of the total budget)
Flowers - $2,400 (8% of the total budget)
Month of Coordinator - $2,100 (7% of the total budget)
Decor - $600 (2% of the total budget)
Hair & Makeup - $600 (2% of the total budget)
Stationary - $300 (1% of the total budget)
Cake/Desserts - $300 (1% of the total budget)
Officiant - $300(1% of the total budget)

Note there is no allotment for rentals here, it is a MUST that you find a wedding venue that includes what you need, i.e tables, chairs, linens, etc.

Now I know what you are thinking, holy smokes the money spreads out VERY quickly. However, if you follow your guideline, you know what is in your budget before you start shopping & it helps you avoid a level of disappointment when you find out the person you were hoping to book, you can’t afford in the budget. If you book a venue for cheaper, or a photographer for less, that is great! You can account the money somewhere else, or choose to save it instead. Once you have your guideline set, start your search for venues and all the goodies!

Some ways you can change your budget above:

Online invites - $300 you can put elsewhere
Not sure you want a videographer, put that budget towards something you find value in for you, like food, photos, florals etc.
Don’t like cake? Don’t do one! Put that money elsewhere!

Here are some key takeaways for you to remember when setting your budget.

Step 1: Define Your Priorities

Take some time with your partner to discuss and identify your top priorities for the wedding. Do you dream of a lavish venue, a gourmet menu, or a larger guest list? Understanding what matters most to you will allow you to allocate your budget accordingly.

Step 2: Determine Your Total Budget

Consider your financial situation and determine the total amount you are comfortable spending on your wedding. This will be the starting point for allocating funds to various wedding components.

Step 3: Break Down Your Budget

Break down your budget into different categories such as venue, catering, attire, decorations, entertainment, photography, and other miscellaneous expenses. Allocate a percentage of your total budget to each category based on your priorities and preferences.

Step 4: Research Costs

Thoroughly research the average costs of items and services in your area. Consult with wedding planners, vendors, or recently married couples to gather information. This will give you a realistic idea of what you can expect to pay for each category within your budget.

Step 5: Create a Spreadsheet

Create a detailed spreadsheet to track your expenses. List each category, the estimated cost for that category, the actual amount spent, and any remaining balance. This will help you monitor your spending and stay on track.

Step 6: Prioritize Your Spending

Within each category, prioritize your spending and identify areas where you can save money. For example, you could opt for a less expensive venue or rent a few key decorations instead of buying them. By making smart choices, you can still have the wedding of your dreams while staying within your budget.

Step 7: Build a Contingency Fund

Set aside some funds for unexpected expenses or emergencies that may arise during the planning process or on the wedding day itself. This contingency fund will give you peace of mind and ensure you are prepared for any last-minute surprises.

Step 8: Keep Track of Deposits and Payments

Be organized when it comes to tracking payments and deposits. Make note of due dates and amounts in your spreadsheet, so you can stay on top of your financial commitments.

Step 9: Regularly Review and Adjust

Regularly review your budget and make necessary adjustments as you progress with your wedding planning. This will help you adapt to any unforeseen circumstances or changes in priorities that may arise along the way.

Step 10: Celebrate Sensibly

Finally, always remember that the true essence of a wedding lies in the celebration of love and commitment. While budgets are important, don't let financial pressures overshadow the joyous moments of your special day. Focus on creating memories and savoring every moment with your loved ones.
Setting a wedding budget may seem daunting, but by following this guide, you'll have a clear roadmap to help you allocate your funds wisely. Remember, it's not about the amount of money spent, but about the love and happiness that will radiate throughout your celebration.

Happy planning and congratulations again!
